How Often Should I clean My Makeup Brushes?

Beauty is the name of the game and it is a game we love playing until it’s time to clean those beautiful pieces to the game. We use them very often to apply our foundations, locking our eyeshadow in place with a flicker or two of the magic wand in which we refer to as a makeup brush. It’s said that diamonds are a girl’s best friend but I beg to differ. My makeup brushes are my best friends and I can’t go a day without my girlsss!

Our makeup brushes does some really heavy lifting for us yet we often neglect them. After we’ve used them, we toss them to the side like they have no feelings at all. We leave them dirty, filled with foundation, concealer, eyeshadow and to top all of that, we allow bacteria to grow within their very delicate walls. Just shameful I tell ya.

If your makeup brushes could talk and had hands I’m quite sure many of us would be slapped and cussed at because they have had enough of our abuse and neglect. Your makeup brushes are the backbone to your poised and polished look so why not treat them with the utmost respect. A clean makeup brush is the essence to your health. When you don’t clean your brushes you are at risk of spreading bacteria all over your face the next time that you use them. Have you ever wondered why your face is breaking out all of a sudden? The first place you look is at your skincare products. That’s a great place to start but an even better place to start is in your daily routine. If you keep putting on dirty clothes eventually someone is going to notice and possibly smell that your clothes are dirty. The same rules apply for your makeup brushes. Overtime your skin will reveal that you are applying dirty beauty tools to your face which causes a lot of embarrassment and that my friend attacks your confidence.

It’s an essential part of your beauty process to make sure your makeup brushes are clean and sterilized. This will keep your breakouts to a minimal.

How often should I wash my makeup brushes?

Washing your personal makeup brushes and tools once a week should do the trick. If you are a working makeup artist you already know that you must apply a clean, sterilized brush to each clients face which means you should be washing your makeup brushes daily. Your brushes carry bacteria which may lead to pesky breakouts that could definitely be avoided.

You have two options when washing your makeup tools. You can use the wet method or the dry method. You must also take into consideration what type of bristles your brush have, meaning is it synthetic or real hair? This is important because synthetic brushes, in my opinion takes more time cleaning due to product can sit on your brush and weigh it down if a lot of product is used.

I prefer the wet method for my once a week wash on my personal makeup tools. However, I prefer the dry method when on the go from client to client. If you prefer the dry method some brush cleaners you may want to add to your makeup kit is listed below.

Dry Makeup Brush Cleaners:

Japonesque Makeup Brush Cleaner- I purchased this handy dandy kit favorite from Ulta Beauty Store.

NYX Makeup Brush Cleaner- This can be purchased from any Target store for as little as $10.00

Cinema Secrets Makeup Brush Cleaner- can be purchased at any Sephora store or online for $25.00

Bottom line is that you have to keep your health at the forefront of your mind at all times. Yes we love that we have a choice of how we show up daily but more importantly the choice of how we choose to care for every aspect of our body. Love the skin you're in and love the friends that help you show up glammed and ready to slay the day! Now go wash your brushes- Xoxo
