How To Transition Your Skincare Routine From Winter To Summer

Yes ma’am…we all know skin can be LOUD. One minute your skin is glowing and minding its business. The next minute it’s oily, congested, breaking out, and acting like it pays the cost to be the boss.
Skin has personality.
Skin has moods
.And baby…skin will absolutely let you know when it’s time to switch some things up.
As we start approaching the summer season, I get asked the same question EVERY single year:
“Should I change my skincare products during the summer?” And my answer will forever be:
ABSOLUTELY! Because listen…The products that carried your skin through cold weather, dry air, and winter dehydration are not always the same products your skin needs once the heat, humidity, sweat, and sunshine clock in for summer.
Your skin has different needs in different seasons and once you understand that? Your skin starts behaving like your favorite primer. Now, let’s get into the real tea.
Why Your Skin Changes During The Summer
Summer brings:
More heat
More humidity
More sweating
More oil production
More clogged pores
More bacteria sitting on the skin
And if you keep layering heavy winter products on top of all that?
Congratulations! You just created a traffic jam in your pores.
Now your skin is congested, irritated, extra oily, and your makeup sliding off like butter on a chicken.
This is exactly why transitioning your skincare routine matters.
Here’s What Your Skin ACTUALLY Needs During Summer
Salicylic Acid Cleanser
Summer sweat is REAL.
And when sweat mixes with oil, dirt, makeup, and bacteria, your pores can quickly become clogged.
That’s where a salicylic acid cleanser comes in clutch.
Unlike basic cleansers that only clean the surface, salicylic acid goes deeper into the pores to help:
Remove excess oil
Break down buildup
Reduce congestion
Help prevent acne breakouts
Keep pores looking cleaner and smoother
Basically…it’s helping your skin not spiral out during hot girl summer.
Now let me say this: Don’t go overboard and start scrubbing your face let the cleanser do the heavy lifting.
Gentle and consistent always wins.
Exfoliation Is Mandatory Sis
Dead skin cells mixed with sweat and oil? A hot damn mess I tell ya.
If you’re not exfoliating during the summer, your skin can start looking dull, rough, congested, and uneven.
Exfoliation helps remove dead skin buildup so your products can ACTUALLY penetrate the skin properly.
Yes…that glow everybody wants?A lot of that comes from proper exfoliation.
But let’s not lose our minds here. Always remember a little bit goes a long way. Don't be out here acting a fool scrubbing your skin like you scrubbing dirty pots.
Exfoliating 2-3 times a week is enough.
Over-exfoliating can damage your skin barrier and have your face out here fighting for survival.
And we’re not doing that this summer.
Switch To A Water-Based Moisturizer
One of the BIGGEST mistakes people make during summer is continuing to use super heavy moisturizers designed for winter dryness.
Winter skin needs richer products because cold weather strips moisture from the skin.
Summer skin?Not so much.
During warmer months, your skin usually responds better to lightweight, water-based moisturizers that hydrate without feeling greasy or suffocating.
You still need moisture. You just need lighter moisture.
Because contrary to popular belief: Skipping moisturizer does NOT stop oily skin.
It usually makes it worse.
SPF Is Non-Negotiable
Let’s be crystal clear.
Nobody wants skin looking like a leather handbag by 45.
SPF is not optional just because you’re melanated.
SPF is not optional because you don’t burn. SPF is not optional because you work indoors.
UV rays contribute to:
Premature aging
Hyperpigmentation
Dark spots
Fine lines
Loss of elasticity
Skin cancer
If you’re investing in skincare products but skipping SPF? Sis…you’re basically leaving your hard work unprotected. Apply it daily even when it’s cloudy, even when you’re running errands, even when you're not gonna be outside long. The sun does not care about any of that chyle.
Simple Summer Skincare Routine
AM Routine
Salicylic Acid Cleanser
Lightweight Toner
Water-Based Moisturizer
SPF
PM Routine
Gentle Cleanser
Exfoliant (2-3x weekly)
Serum
Lightweight Moisturizer
Simple.Balanced.Effective.
Your skin does not need 18 unnecessary products layered on top of each other like a wedding cake.
Your skin changes with the seasons, and your skincare routine should too.
Summer skincare is all about:
Keeping pores clean
Preventing congestion
Staying hydrated
Protecting the skin barrier
Controlling excess oil WITHOUT stripping the skin
The goal isn’t to punish your skin. The goal is to support it. So before summer fully clocks in…Take a look at your routine and ask yourself:
“Is my skincare helping my skin survive this heat…or making it struggle harder?”
Because the vibe is glowing skin all summer.
