Oily Skin 101: Why Your Skin Keeps Producing So Much Oil

No matter what you do, your face looks like you stuck your head in a bowl of cooking oil by lunchtime.
Your makeup? Sliding off faster than a situationship with no communication skills.
Your pores? Looking extra loud and disrespectful.
And now you standing in the mirror like, “WTF is REALLY happening here?!”
Ok sis…calm down. Come sit by your favorite skincare bestie because we’re about to get into it.
As an esthetician for 13+ years, I’ve seen oily skin OVER and OVER again. And believe it or not, most people are making oily skin worse trying to “dry it out.”
Yep. The dragging, stripping, over-washing, alcohol-filled products? They’re part of the problem.
The good news? Oily skin can absolutely be balanced once you understand what your skin is actually trying to tell you.
And honestly? Your skin talks very simple. We just overcomplicate it.
What Is Oily Skin?
Oily skin is when your sebaceous glands produce excess sebum (oil), leaving the skin looking shiny, greasy, and harder to manage throughout the day.
Sebum itself isn’t bad. Your skin NEEDS oil to stay healthy, protected, and youthful.
The problem starts when your skin goes into overdrive and starts producing too much of it.
That’s when the enlarged pores, acne breakouts, makeup separation, and “why am I shining like a ring light?” moments start happening.
So…Why Is Your Skin Producing So Much Oil?
Your Skin Is Thirsty
Listen carefully because this right here is where so many people get it twisted.
Most oily skin is actually dehydrated skin throwing a full-blown tantrum.
Your skin feels stripped, dry, and unbalanced, so it starts overproducing oil trying to protect itself.
It’s basically saying:
“Girl…since YOU won’t moisturize me properly, I’ll do it my damn self.”
And now your face is fighting for its life by 2 PM.
Genetics
Now let’s be real. Sometimes genetics clock in and do what they wanna do.
Some people naturally produce more oil because of hereditary factors. If oily skin runs in your family, chances are your sebaceous glands are naturally more active.
But even genetic oily skin can still be managed and balanced with the right routine.
Climate & Humidity
If you live somewhere hot, humid, or sticky enough to make your edges surrender immediately…your skin may naturally produce more oil.
Heat and humidity increase sweat and sebum production, which can leave your skin feeling greasy faster than usual.
Florida girlies? Yeah…you know exactly what I mean.
Hormonal Changes
Hormones LOVE to shake things up.
Birth control, stress, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, menopause, and hormonal medications can all trigger excess oil production.
Sometimes your skin changes out of nowhere and you’re confused because your routine hasn’t changed.
Meanwhile your hormones are backstage causing chaos.
Enlarged Pores
Large pores and oily skin go together like drama and social media.
When your skin produces excess oil, pores can appear larger because they’re constantly pushing out sebum.
Acne, genetics, inflammation, and over-exfoliating can also make pores appear more noticeable.
Skipping Moisturizer
And here we go with the BIGGEST offender right here.
A lot of oily skin babes skip moisturizer because they think:
“My skin already oily enough.”
WRONG!
Skipping moisturizer can actually make oily skin worse because your skin goes into panic mode trying to replace the hydration it’s missing.
So now instead of balanced skin…you’re producing enough oil to fry chicken.
How To Fix Oily Skin Quick, Fast & In A Hurry
The goal is NOT to completely remove oil.
The goal is BALANCE.
Your skin needs hydration, consistency, and gentle products that support the barrier instead of attacking it. Once your skin realizes: “Ok cool…we hydrated now,”…it usually calms down on the excessive oil production.
Simple AM Routine For Oily Skin
Morning Routine
Gentle Cleanser
Toner
Lightweight Moisturizer
SPF (NON-NEGOTIABLE SIS)
That’s it.Simple.Clean.Consistent.
You do not need 47 products and a chemistry degree.
PM Routine For Oily Skin
Night Routine
Gentle Cleanser
Exfoliant (2x weekly ONLY)
Treatment Mask
Serum
Moisturizer
And let me say this louder for the people in the back:
DO. NOT. OVER. EXFOLIATE.
Because then your skin gets irritated, inflamed, and starts producing even MORE oil trying to defend itself. Now everybody stressed out.
The Real Tea About Oily Skin
Most oily skin is simply unbalanced skin.
Once you become consistent with hydration and stop trying to punish your skin for existing, you’ll start noticing:
Less oil production
Smaller-looking pores
Makeup lasting longer
Fewer breakouts
Smoother texture
More balanced skin overall
Consistency is what changes skin. Not randomly using products for three days and expecting Beyoncé-level results overnight.
Takeaways
Stop skipping moisturizer
Stick to a simple AM & PM routine
Avoid over-washing your face
Don’t over-exfoliate trying to “dry out” your skin
Hydrated skin = calmer skin
Consistency matters more than perfection
And remember sis…
Your skin is not trying to embarrass you. It’s trying to communicate with you.
You just gotta learn her language.
